Agonista announce the release of their first full length album "Grey And Dry" via Armageddon Label. 11 furious tracks recorded and mixed by Patrick Alexander at Cacho Estudio in Tijuana (Habak, Violencia, Abyssal) and mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege (Converge, Dropdead, Tragedy).
"We live in an epoch when mainstream news outlets seemingly never cease to add kindling to the fires that inflame xenophobia, while elected officials make war cries for the U.S. to violate Mexico’s sovereignty. A sense of terror is provoked ad infinitum that hungry hordes of migrants and asylum seekers are spilling across a porous border, ready to rape, pillage, steal your job and pump your kids full of fentanyl. It is during this time that transfronterizo band Agonista straddles the line, building bridges between Tijuana and San Diego. Calling both cities home, the band stands against the fear and hate mongering, while blasting out its own fierce brand of punk/hardcore/d-beat, tinged with cross cultural influences from both sides of the border." - Agonista

Agonista is a band made up of longtime friends, featuring current and ex-members of Bumbklaat, DFMK, Run For Your Fucking Life, Spanakorzo, Sweep The Leg Johnny, Swing Kids, and many others. Their five song EP "Embusteros" was released in 2018, now they are ready to finally to unleash "Grey And Dry" for people to hear.

Full driven destructive intensity of earlier crustcore - early 90’s Swedish hardcore from EXTREME NOISE TERROR, DISRUPT, UNCURBED style hardcore punk to the dark, gloomier side of 90’s era NEUROSIS tracks sung both in Spanish and English. In contrast to the stereotype of the sunny SoCal border town, AGONISTA brings out the feeling of anger and the dark realities the status quo wants to shove underneath the rug. "AGONISTA consists of San Diego and Tijuana scene veterans who in the past 25 years appeared in BUMBKLAATT, SWING KIDS, SOME GIRLS, RUN FOR YOUR FUCKING LIFE and SPANAKORZO, to name a few. In contrast to some of their previous outlets, AGONISTA plays what they themselves might consider a rather “traditional” brand of hardcore: a tight crustcore/’90s Swedish HC approach sung both Spanish and English, something along the lines of DISRUPT, STATE OF FEAR, SEVERED HEAD OF STATE, UNCURBED that was found in the Prank or Distortion Records catalogs a generation back. AGONISTA carries on the tradition particular to the Tijuanese crustcore style that centered around DISCORDIA (members of which went on to BUMBKLAATT and COÄCCION in the ’00s). Being a cross-border band between the US and Mexico, they directly feel and experience the complex reality between the two countries in their daily lives. Their output seems to be the direct friction from the socioeconomic differences spawned from the systematic oppression of people’s lives tangled by racism, drug abuse, financial instability, and violence. Embusteros sounds like a burst of the filthy remnants that have been forcefully hidden underneath the rug by the “America’s Finest City” and the feeling of anger and frustration in order to survive in “Sin City.” - Reviewer Daiki Kusuhara / MRR #446 • July 2020
